VISIT TO THE OHIO SECRETARY OF STATE OFFICE
The students then met with the members of the Secretary of State staff in charge of campaign finance, information technology, and voters' education. The officials discussed recent developments in their respective areas and answered students' numerous questions. The issues of the use of new technology in voting and the rules on campaign contributions and expenditures generated the most questions.
The ONU international LL.M. students visited the Ohio Secretary of State Office in Columbus on October 14, 2011. During the hour-long meeting with the students, Secretary of State Jon Husted provided an overview of the election system in Ohio and answered the students' questions regarding the intricacies of the election process as well as business registration and other services provided by the office.
VISIT TO THE LIMA COURTS
During orientation, international LL.M. students visited three different courts in Lima, Ohio.
In the Lima Municipal Court, Judge Rickard Workman discussed the jurisdiction of his court and introduced the students to jury trials and the practice of electing judges.

In the Allen County Court of Common Pleas, Judge Jeffrey L. Reed discussed the right to a speedy trial, the division of labor between the judge and the jury, and the jury selection process.

Third District Court of Appeals
Judges Steven R. Shaw and John R. Willamowski of the Third District Court of Appeals talked about the peculiarities of the appeal process and decision-making by judges at the appellate level. The election of judges and jury trials were the topics that generated the most questions from the students.
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2011 GRADUATES
Commencement on May 15, 2011, was a day of celebration for all of our students as they received their J.D. and/or LL.M. Degrees in Democratic Governance and Rule of Law.
The Honorable Jeff S. Sutton of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit provided the Commencement Address.
